Barcelona Hotel W in the Barceloneta area of Barcelona is known locally as the la vela or hotel Vela, because of its sail like shape. This shape produces some gusty winds on the south side on the walk along the sea wall of Barcelona port. The front (north side) has beach bars and leads onto Sant Sebastian Beach, Platja de Sant Sebastià.
The building was designed by Ricardo Bofill and stands on 7 hectares of land that was reclaimed from the sea and forms part of the new harbor sea wall for Barcelona port. Construction was completed in 2009.
There is some controversy surrounding its construction because it breaches Spanish law that states that no new buildings such as hotels can be constructed within 100m of the coastal (litoral) areas of Spain.
Additionally, The land is owned by the Port Authority of Barcelona, a public entity which should have made the bids public but the award method has not been made public.

Barcelona Sant Sebastian beach in front of the hotel is or at least was a popular nudist beach but with the new hotel and the gentrification of this part of Barceloneta, nudism is not really desired on this beach anymore. Despite this some people still sunbathe and swim in the buff.
Because of the shape of the Hotel W and its location right on the beach, it creates some north to south wind patterns which make it an ideal spot to learn to windsurf.
In summer the hotel W hosts terrace/pool parties. The drinks prices at these parties reflect it's exclusive location. Entry is by adding your name to a guest list.
There are multiple bicycle anchorage points along the beach front in Barceloneta although I this part of town is famous for pickpockets and a bicycle theft so even if it is chained up, it may get stolen. In Summer when the beaches get busy you may not be permitted to take a bicycle onto the sand.
Remember that beachwear is not permitted to walk around the streets of Barcelona. so if you stray to far from the beach you in a bikini or without a t-shirt you may get fined.
The sea wall has ramp access up to the walking and running path behind Hotel-W. No issues with taking a bicycle along this path.
