About Sants Gervasi i Protasi Church
The Sants Gervasi i Protasi church in Sarrià is a modern religious site built between 1942 and 1962 in the style of a Roman temple church in Barcelona. This hidden gem of Roman-style architecture stands on the site of a 10th-century chapel dedicated to Saints Gervasius and Protasius, located at a historic junction of paths from Horta and Sarrià to Collserola.
In the 13th century, a new church was constructed in a Romanesque style, sponsored by the noble Pere de Montjuïc, to serve the 200 residents of the village of Sant Gervasi de Cassoles—now part of Barcelona’s Sant Gervasi district. This makes it one of the oldest historic churches near Tibidabo.
During the Spanish War of Succession, the church was sacked (in 1696 and 1714). In the 17th century, new lateral altars were added. As the population grew, the church was expanded between 1842 and 1847 under architect Josep Francesc Ràfols i Fontanals, with two bells and a clock added in 1862. Further renovations in 1876 by José Vilaseca y Casanovas included a refurbished bell tower, new windows, and the installation of an organ—making it one of the few Barcelona churches with organ music.
The original structure was destroyed in 1936 at the start of the Spanish Civil War, and the parish priest, Lluis Xiró i Roig, was tragically assassinated. Reconstruction began in 1942 under Josep Danés i Torras, and after his death in 1955, the work was completed by Joaquín Porqueres i Banyeres in 1962. Today, it stands as a remarkable example of 20th-century church architecture in Barcelona, blending history, resilience, and Roman-inspired design.
