About Sants Gervasi i Protasi Church, Bonanova

The Sants Gervasi i Protasi church in Sarría is modern (built between 1942 and 1962) in the style of a roman temple. At this location there was a chapel dedicated to Gervasio and Protasio Saints from the 10th Century at a junction of paths from Horta and Sarría to Collserola.

In the 13th century a new church was constructed in a roman style and sponsored by the noble Pere de Montjuïc to give services to the 200 people of the village of Sant Gervasio de Cassolas which was absorbed by Barcelona in 1897.

During the Spanish War of Succession, the church was sacked (in 1796 and 1714) In the 17th century new lateral alters were constructed. Due to the expanding population the church was enlarged between 1842 and 1847 under architect Josep Francesc Ràfols i Fontanals with two church bells and a clock being added in 1862. Additional enlargement works were carried out in 1876 under architect José Vilaseca y Casanovas. In 1889 the bell tower was refurbished, new windows installed and an organ added.

The church was destroyed in 1936 at the start of the civil war and the parish priest, Lluis Xiro I Roig, assassinated. Starting 1942, under Josep Danés i Torras construction began on the current church. When Josep passed in 1955, the works were continued under Joaquín Porqueres i Banyeres until completion in 1962.
