About the Former Sant Agustí Convent
Construction of the original Sant Agustí Convent dates back to 1349. After the siege of 1713–1714, the Citadel Fortress was built, and the Augustinian nuns were relocated to the Raval neighborhood, where they constructed a new church and convent on Hospital Street between 1728 and 1750.
Most of the original convent in the La Ribera district was demolished to make way for military barracks. However, not all of it was lost — the west wing of the cloisters and one side of the church survived and have since been restored. Today, these ruins form part of the Sant Agustí Civic Centre, a public space that includes a chic café bar in a peaceful courtyard setting.
For a deeper look into the history of the Citadel Fortress and its transformation, visit the Parc de la Ciutadella page.

Visiting the Sant Agustí Civic Centre & Courtyard Café
The Sant Agustí Civic Centre is a hidden gem tucked behind the Chocolate Museum in El Born. Access is available via a discreet portal on Carrer del Comerç or through a gate on Plaça de l'Acadèmia. Once inside, you’ll find a peaceful courtyard surrounded by restored convent ruins — a quiet retreat from the busy streets of the city.
At the heart of the courtyard is the Bar del Convent, that offers a relaxed, bohemian atmosphere with rustic furniture, leafy plants, and soft lighting making the courtyard feel like a hidden oasis in the heart of El Born. The menu features brunch-friendly options such as avocado toast, homemade cakes, fresh juices, and specialty coffee, alongside Mediterranean-inspired light meals. It’s a popular spot for locals and visitors looking to enjoy a quiet brunch or coffee break surrounded by historic stone walls and greenery.
Whether you're visiting the Chocolate Museum next door or exploring the Citadel Fortress history, the Sant Agustí courtyard is a perfect place to pause and enjoy a slower pace.
