About Barcelona Beaches - Barceloneta from hotel W to Port Olímpic
Barceloneta is the main tourist Beach area in Barcelona. Barceloneta is a former fishing village that today has a lot of tourist rental flats and over priced apartments because of it's proximity to the beach. This makes it the Barceloneta Beaches some of the most crowded in Barcelona during the summer.
However, the the downsides of Barceloneta beaches are compensated by an abundance of entertainment and seafood options. The most popular places to eat fresh seafood and cocktails are the chiringuitos (Bars on the Beach in a hut). For entertainment you can try water sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing in Sant Sebastian Beach.
- Playa de Sant Sebastian: Is the beach next to the Hotel W, a high-end hotel that hosts terrace and pool parties. A Nudist (clothing optional) beach
- Playa de Sant Miquel: Runs from Passeig de Joan de Borba to the breakwater and has the rusty stack of cubes sculpture on the beach called La Estrella Herida
- Playa de Barceloneta: Runs from the first breakwater to the larger second breakwater infront of Barceloneta park. The breakwater has open air free to use gym equipment on it
- Playa de Somorrostro: From the second breakwater (Espigó del Gas, Barcelona) to Port Olympic (Port Olímpic, Barcelona) and has the famous beah front nightclubs of Carpe Diem, Opium and IceBarcelona.
The Barceloneta Seafront and promenade is divided into several beaches:
Before the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics what is today the beach and littoral area of Barcelona was railway sidings and wasteland occupied by squatter settlements in former industrial ruins. The seafront of Barcelona was extensively redeveloped for the 1992 Olympics. The beach is artificially supplemented with dredged sand.
