About Sacred Heart Of Jesus Temple Tibidabo

Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus or Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor is the church at top of Tibidabo mountain with the statue of Jesus on the top of the spire. Tibidabo church is a prominent landmark that can be seen from Barcelona city when looking in the direction of the Collserola hills.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus temple is located next to the Tibidabo Amusement park Parc d'atraccions Tibidabo and a short walk from the equally prominent Torre collserola.

Nearby also is Fabra Observatory Which together form a collection of attractions to see when visiting Tibidabo.

Tibidabo Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus History

Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus can be considered as two churches on one. The ground floor is older and contains the crypt. Building started in 1902 by architect Enric Sagnier on the ground floor church. The upper church completed in 1961 was finished by the son of Enric Sagnier, Josep Maria Sagnier i Vidal.

The idea for a church on the summit of Mount Tibidabo dates from the late 19th century. In 1886 a neo-gothic hermitage was built and two years later for the universal exhibition the Vallvidrera road was urbanised. The project of building a full church suffered a setback because there were plans to build an observatory on the summit. The observatory eventually got built lower down the mountain (Fabra Observatory) ceding the land to the church.

The first stone was laid on the 28th of December 1902 with the crypt being built between 1903 and 1911. (this is the older looking lower part of the church) The main church was built between 1915 and 1951 being consecrated by Bishop Gregorio Modrego in 1952. The towers were completed afterwards with works ending in 1961.

Visiting Sacred Heart Of Jesus Temple Tibidabo

Tibidabo Church, Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor is FREE to visit. However, to fully explore the church and take advantage of the fantastic viewpoint, I recommend the roof terrace visit.

There is an elevator service which goes up to an upper level roof terrace and from here a spiral staircase can be taken right up to the feet of the crowning Jesus statue for spectacular 360 degree views of Barcelona city and Collserola natural park. The elevator costs 5 euros (or 6 euros for elevator and audio guide). Note that the lift service closes about 1 hour before closing time of the temple.
